Lightroom Classic (and ACR) recently added support for a new DNG format which enables the ability to create RAW files which are 92% smaller with no visible loss of quality! This is made possible by using a new lossy image format based on the new JPEG XL (aka JXL) file format in DNG v1.
Yes, exactly. Compressing RAWs is as sexy to photographers as putting a plastic cover on a designer sofa. We cant usually get the moment back, so we guard RAWs like our eyeballs. But Rawsie does a good job.
But for the casual photographer who doesnt want to be forced into editing every single photo they take, is shooting RAW always the best choice? Not always, no. Not only do RAW files require more time editing, but they take up more space on the memory card and they will fill up your cameras buffer faster too.
RAW files are docHubly bigger than JPEG (and any other) image file formats. Thats because they contain all the raw image information captured by your digital cameras sensors, completely uncompressed.
How big is a RAW image? The size of a RAW file depends on the size of the sensor, and whether your camera is an MFT, APS-C, full-frame or medium format camera. Most RAW files are sized between 20 - 40 MB per file.
However, you have the option of resizing the image to (for most cameras) 50%, 66.7%, 133%, 167%, and 200%. For most cameras, it makes little difference if you change the image size in Camera Raw or use the appropriate resampling algorithm in Photoshops Image Size dialog box.
You can use any software that converts image file types as your own personal image compressor. In Lightroom, you can compress your original photos by turning them into a JPG or a TIF file. JPGs tend to work best for sharing and storing images, because they maintain reasonable image quality at a relatively small size.
The primary way to reduce the file size of an image is by increasing the amount of compression. In most image editing applications this is done by the selections you make in the Save As or Export As dialog box when saving a PNG, JPG, or GIF.
