For instance, to find the volume of a cube, you would calculate the following: length x width x height. The product of this formula will return the volume of an object in total cubic feet (CFT).
Start by calculating the length x width x height in your preferred units and then following the conversion detailed below: Cubic Inches: Divide the final number by 1728. Cubic Yards: Multiply the result by 27. Cubic Meters: Multiply the result by 35.31.
Natural gas has roughly 1,050 BTUs per cubic foot (0.028 cubic meters). Natural gas contains 36,303 BTUs per cubic meter (35.3 cubic feet).
In 2023, the U.S. annual average heat content of natural gas delivered to end-use sectors averaged about 1,038 Btu per cubic foot. Therefore, 100 cubic feet (1 Ccf) of natural gas equals 103,800 Btu, or 1.038 therms. One thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas equals 1.038 MMBtu, or 10.38 therms.
In terms of energy output, one thousand cubic feet (MCF) of gas is equal to approximately 1,000,000 BTU (British Thermal Units). One BTU is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit at sea level (which is roughly equivalent to a kitchen match).
Divide the energy transfer rate in BTUs per hour by 100,000, which is the number of BTUs in a therm. For instance, if you are converting a rate of 500,000 BTUs per hour: 500,000 100,000 = 5 therms/hr. Multiply this answer by 96.7, which is the volume of a therm of natural gas: 5 96.7 = 483.5 ft/hr.
Multiply the length, width and height and divide the resulting number by 1,728. This is the containers volume in cubic feet. The above container is 1.1 cubic feet (round to the nearest tenth).
