Generally, heart failure begins with the left side, specifically the left ventricle your hearts main pumping chamber. Fluid may back up in the lungs, causing shortness of breath. Fluid may back up into the abdomen, legs and feet, causing swelling.
A fluid restriction is used as a way to avoid overloading your heart if you have heart failure, as more fluid in your bloodstream makes it harder for your heart to pump. For the same reason, your doctor may prescribe a medicine known as a diuretic, or water tablet, to help get rid of excess fluid.
Maintaining records of the patients fluid intake and output (IO) has long been considered an essential component of nursing care to assess hydration status. It is also an important basis for doctors to formulate and adjust treatment strategies.
With congestive heart failure, the hearts capacity to pump blood cannot keep up with the bodys need. As the heart weakens, blood begins to back up and force liquid through the capillary walls. The term congestive refers to the resulting buildup of fluid in the ankles and feet, arms, lungs, and/or other organs.
One of the primary problems with heart failure is excess fluid in the body, which the heart must pump to the kidneys to excrete. HF patients retain fluids in the body. In order to avoid this fluid overload, patients need to monitor their daily fluid intake.
What Are the Different Types of Congestive Heart Failure? Heart failure can occur on the left side of the heart, the right side, or both. Most commonly, it begins in the hearts primary pumping chamber - the left ventricle.
During pericardiocentesis, a doctor inserts a needle through the chest wall and into the tissue around the heart. Once the needle is inside the pericardium, the doctor inserts a long, thin tube called a catheter. The doctor uses the catheter to drain excess fluid. The catheter may come right out after the procedure.

Generally the treatment is a low-salt diet and diuretics. (brand name Lasix) is one of the frequently used medications. When patients are admitted to the hospital, they are monitored on this regimen and usually improve.
In right-sided heart failure, the hearts right ventricle is too weak to pump enough blood to the lungs. As blood builds up in the veins, fluid gets pushed out into the tissues in the body. Right-sided heart failure symptoms include swelling and shortness of breath.
