You probably know that Redlining an engine is a bad thing. It means you have punched the throttle enough that the engine is spinning at a dangerously high speed. Everyone knows that redlining is to be avoided at all costs.
Occasional redlining is generally safe, but regular redlining can damage the engine over time and lead to car engine failure.
After all, when redlined, an engine can sound like its about to blow. However, theres no need to worry. Redlining will not damage an engine or cause it to explode, no matter how cruelly you treat it. Therefore, revving the engine to its maximum speed several times a week is not a problem.
Revving is no different. A car rev is fine when done occasionally as it ensures better oil circulation throughout the engine. It can also help revive the battery when jumpstarting a car. However, frequent revving can do more damage than good to vehicle engines.
Engines are designed to rev to the red-line with a little safety margin. Most times, pointless as max power is normally about 5001000 RPM before the red line. If you rev to the red-line before changing gears, youve already past the optimum RPM by a long shot and youre driving on the downward slope of the power band.
You wont hurt anything, but its not the fastest way. Feel free to rev to the moon in first, however keep in mind that the motor will never load up and as such will make less power/torque than it will in 2nd. If you can make more power for longer then youll accelerate faster even without the extra gearing advantage.
Redlining might not be worth doing seeing all the problems it can cause a minimal reward but it does sound cool to do it and there is no harm redlining your engine once a while.
Results of Over-Revving. Over-revving can cause serious harm to your engine, even in the few seconds it takes to realize that you meant to shift to fourth gear but wound up in second instead. The good and bad news is that if you seriously damage something youll know it almost instantly.
