Types of ACL Injuries Grade 1 least severe ACL injury. Means you stretched but didnt quite tear, the ACL. The ligament can still keep the knee joint stable. Grade 2 a partial tear. Means you stretched the ACL, making it loose. Grade 3 most severe ACL injury. Means a complete or near complete tear.
Full ACL tears cannot heal on their own. These tears almost always need to be treated surgically, typically using a minimally invasive approach called arthroscopy.
The maximum score for ligament laxity is 9. A score of 9 means hyperlax. A score of zero is tight. Several researchers appoint a score of 0-3 as normal and a score of 4-9 as representing ligamentous laxity (Al - Rawi et al 1985, Diaz et al 1993, Klemp et al 1984).
[26] : Grade 0, Tight with firm end-feel; Grade I, Nominal increase in laxity compared to contralateral knee; Grade II, Slight increase in anterior translation compared to contralateral knee; Grade III, Excessive anterior translation compared to contralateral knee.
ACL injuries are considered sprains and vary in severity. Grade 1: The ligament has sustained mild damage and been slightly stretched (ACL sprain) but can still keep the knee joint stable. Grade 2: The ACL is stretched and becomes loose. This type of ACL injury is often referred to as a partial tear of the ligament.
Knee laxity was reported ing to the IKDC classification system. High-grade laxity was defined as a Lachman or anterior drawer examination greater than 10mm different from the contralateral side or a 3+ pivot-shift.
A positive Lachman test or pivot test is strong evidence of an existing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, and a negative Lachman test is fairly good evidence against that injury. Although widely used, the anterior drawer is the least helpful maneuver for diagnosing an ACL tear.
If nothing is done, the ACL injury may turn into chronic ACL deficiency. Your knee may become more and more unstable and may give out more often. The abnormal sliding within the knee also can hurt cartilage. It can trap and damage the menisci in the knee and can also lead to early osteoarthritis.
