Hi. Iamp;#39;m Jason Scappaticci and I work in the Office of Transitional Programs here at MCC. In an effort to help our students along the way to graduation weamp;#39;ve decided to launch a series of quick tip videos. In these videos weamp;#39;re going to cover topics that can make you a stronger student. I want to cover note-taking today. I bet a lot of you take notes like this, using the sentence method. In the sentence method you, grab your piece of paper and you actually try to write down everything that your professor is saying Unfortunately what youamp;#39;re going to end up with is a big sheet of paper thatamp;#39;s covered with writing and itamp;#39;s very difficult to find the information that you need to find. There might be a lot of great information on here but where is it. Try the outline method instead. In an outline youamp;#39;re going to organize the lecture and the notes that youamp;#39;re taking. So your professor will begin with their major point. Label that

A reverse outline should go paragraph by paragraph. Read one paragraph at a time and write the main idea of each paragraph in the margins of your paper (remember that for your first paragraph, the main point should be your thesis statement!!!) Then list these points, paragraph by paragraph, on another piece of paper. Reverse outlining follows a two-step, repeatable process: In the left-hand margin, write down the topic of each paragraph. Try to use as few words as possible. In the right-hand margin, write down how the paragraph topic advances the overall argument of the text. Again, be brief.
Start by considering your intro paragraph and, on a separate piece of paper, write out your thesis statement. This should act as the guide to the rest of the outline: each body paragraph should somehow logically correspond to your thesis. Next, go through each body paragraph and summarize it in one to two sentences.
The outlining method is perhaps the most common form of note taking used by college students; an outline naturally organizes the information in a highly structured, logical manner, forming a skeleton of the textbook chapter or lecture subject that serves as an excellent study guide when preparing for tests.
