So lets start the fire! Ensure that all air vents in the fireplace are open. Put the logs on the bottom of the fireplace. Add a layer of small logs of about 4 cm, and then one or two layers of kindling. Remember that air is important approx. Put a couple of firelighters on top of the layer of kindling wood. Light it!
Remove the label from the bottom of the log. Make sure the fire starter is to the back of the bottom hole. Face the bottom hole into the wind (if present), light the wick of the fire starter, if needed, use the label to fan air into the bottom hole of the log.
With a chainsaw or hand saw, cut cracks up the length of the log so that it will emit light. Sand off any rough edges before varnishing. Plug in a low watt LED.
Bounce Off the Walls | Add Light Fixtures to Your Walls: Or try wall sconces. In a log home, especially one with cathedral ceilings, sconces bring the light down to the human level, advises Katie. An added benefit: Side lighting flatters the face; overhead light can cast unattractive shadows.
Upside Down or Top-Down Method of Lighting a Fire The upside down method aids in the flue getting up to temperature more quickly and removes the need to open the appliance door to add fuel to the kindling which means there is less of a chance of the combustion chamber cooling.
Make sure your wood is dry. First insert two larger blocks of wood into the stove, then put two smaller pieces of kindling on top length wise, followed by two larger pieces. Between these last two blocks insert some fire-lighters. Finally put another layer of kindling cross-wise and fire-lighters in between.
