The concept of a surname is practically non-existent. Egyptians follow a chronological linear naming structure, i.e., Birth name, fathers name, grandfathers name, great grandfathers name, and so on. Sometimes the direct lineage is skipped and replaced with memorable family name.
However, many Egyptian names are long owing to the naming culture in their country. In Egypt, people usually dont have a surname. Their first name is followed by their fathers and paternal grandfathers names. A case in point is Abdelrahman Hussain Ahmed.
A family name frequently begins with AL-, or EL-, e.g. AL-QADHAFI,nbut the family name can also be written without it, i.e. QADHAFI. Some family names are derived from geographical place names, e.g. AL-TIKRITI (from Tikrit), AL-BAGHDADI (from Baghdad), AL-MASRI (the Egyptian), and can indicate a familys origins.
The common Egyptian naming convention sees a child given a personal name followed by the given names of their father and grandfather (e.g. Mohamed Ahmed Hussain). The use of a family name is becoming more common (e.g. Kareem El MASRY). Family names frequently begin with El- (e.g. EL-SHENAWY).
In Spain, its common for many surnames to end in ez, such as Rodriguez, Martinez, and Hernandez. This suffix has its roots in the Latin suffix -icius or -itius, which was used to denote a son of or descendant of. Over time, the suffix evolved into the ez ending that we see today in many of our surnames.
The concept of a surname is lacking in Egypt as Egyptians carry their fathers name as their first middle name. So, the surnames continuously change with generations. Common surnames are Mohammed, al-Busiri, el-masri.
Last names can be derived from occupations (e.g., Smith), locations (e.g., Hill), personal characteristics (e.g., Young), or paternal lineage (e.g., Johnson). In some cultures, surnames were assigned based on the fathers name (e.g., OConnor, meaning son of Connor).
How to file for a name change. In most states, your local court clerk at your county courthouse can provide you with the legal forms, legal documents, name change request form, or name change document with the basic steps you need to request a name change. You must file the original completed documents with the court.
