NOTE: Discrepancies in the DEERS record such as citizenship, name change or new contract start date, MUST be updated by the Civilian Personnel Office prior to receiving the CAC. NOTE: CACs can be renewed within 90 days from date of expiration. CACs are issued for a period of three years or less.
The CAC enables entry to installations and buildings and access to secured computer networks and systems. It also documents affiliation with the DOD and gives access to military services, programs and benefits.
If you lose your Uniformed Services ID Card, you should go to the nearest Real-Time Automated Personnel Identification System (RAPIDS) site and obtain your new card. You can use the RAPIDS Site Locator to find your nearest RAPIDS site. Updating information on your card starts with updating information in DEERS.
(1) The background investigation must be completed and favorably adjudicated before issuing CACs to foreign nationals. (2) Foreign nationals are not eligible to receive CAC on an interim basis.
Those eligible for the Uniformed Services ID card are: Military family members including spouses and dependent children over 10. Military retirees. Reservists.
The CAC, a smart card about the size of a credit card, is the standard identification for active duty uniformed Service personnel, Selected Reserve, DoD civilian employees, and eligible contractor personnel.
Applicants for a CAC must be sponsored by a DoD government official or employee. For the majority of CAC holders (Military and DoD Civilian), your sponsor will be an authoritative data feed from your Human Resources department.

(Guard and Reserve family member) -Dependents of: Reserve members not on Active Duty or in receipt of retired pay; former members not in receipt of retired pay; Reserve Service members who die after receipt of Notice of Eligibility.
