It is the multiplicative identity of the integers, real numbers, and complex numbers. 1 is the only natural number that is neither composite (a number with more than two distinct positive divisors) nor prime (a number with exactly two distinct positive divisors) with respect to division.
In first grade, you can expect your child to learn about: Addition and subtraction facts to 20. Addition and subtraction as inverse operations. Count and write within 120. Add within 100. Measure objects. Tell time to hour and half hour. Understand basic fractions.
At its most basic, then, a family consists of an adult and his or her offspring. Most commonly, it consists of two married adults, usually a man and a woman (almost always from different lineages and not related by blood) along with their offspring, usually living in a private and separate dwelling.
Lets start at the beginning with a definition that you can use to explain the meaning of fact families to kids. Basically, a fact family is a group of three different numbers that are related to each other (the way members of a family are) and can be used to create four different number sentences.
A fact family consists of two additions and two subtractions that use the same three numbers. Its the same concept as NUMBER BONDS. For example, 2 + 6 = 8, 6 + 2 = 8, 8 2 = 6, and 8 6 = 2 makes up a fact family (two addition facts plus two subtraction facts).
Math Objectives for 1st Grade Count to 100; county by 5s and 10s to 100; count by 2s to 40. Represent numbers on a number line. Add and subtract 2-digit numbers. Write the date; tell time; read a calendar. Count and create coin combinations; add and subtract money. Identify, sort and classify 2-dimensional shapes.
Usually, the first fact families learned are Addition and Subtraction Fact Families through 10, then Fact Families from 11. I would recommend beginning with learning the operations separately: learning Addition facts (1s to 9s) first, followed by Subtraction facts (1s to 9s).
Based on research, if a first grader can answer a fact in 4 seconds or less it is considered a fluent fact. The teacher partner will beep very quietly at 4 seconds so the student partner knows he/she is over time. They will still continue to figure out the answer.
