In its simplest form, a camera log communicates critical shot information (such as the scene and take number, shot size, and other camera information) from the cinematographer to the editor. Its goal is to streamline the production-to-post workflow, specifically during the assembly stage of editing.
Log Encoding is a color profile that retains more dynamic range information throughout a video image. This is especially helpful when the scene is very bright and the subject could be overexposed or oversaturated. The resulting footage is washed-out compared to a standard video color profile.
A log profile, or logarithmic profile, is a shooting profile, or gamma curve, found on some digital video cameras that gives a wide dynamic and tonal range, allowing more latitude to apply colour and style choices.
What is Log Footage? To put it simply, Logarithmic Footage, generally known as Log, is very flat footage but that contains more details of the scene its baking into the image. This kind of footage is not intended to be used without editing so it needs further alterations to be used as the final footage.
Loggers make notes of the best footage, key themes and story arcs, sometimes transcribing parts of interviews. They note tone, as well as which bits of footage are usable and which are not. They can work in production or post-production. During production, loggers record action as it happens.
LOG is a specific video format processed in the camera, unlike RAW, which is totally unprocessed. LOG footage can be viewed on an external monitor without conversion. And, because its a video format, certain components such as white balance and exposure are made part of the video.
So how do we expose LOG correctly? Expose to the right (meaning to the right of the histogram i.e slight over exposure). Use an 18 percent grey card. Send a normal REC 709 curve to the monitor/eye peice and expose that as you normally would.
The big defining characteristic of LOG is its flat image profile. It looks this way because LOG retains a lot more color information than other footage types.
