To decode a Base64 string using base64: Open the Terminal app. Type base64 -D and hit enter. This puts Terminal into decode mode. Now paste or type your Base64 encoded string after the command and hit enter again. Finally, enter ctrl+d to signal the end of input.
For decoding a base64 string and turning it into a regular string, youll need to use the -d flag with the base64 command. Lets see a demonstration using the echo command. Sometimes, there might be non-alphanumeric characters in a string. You can ignore those while decoding the string by using the -i option.
To decode, you use base64 -d [file] . This command is a powerful tool for encoding and decoding data, making it safe for transmission. In this example, were using the echo command to create a string Hello, and then we pipe that string to the base64 command.

2. Using base64 2.1. Encode. In general, we can use the base64 command to encode a string: $ echo -n Hello, World! | base64 SGVsbG8sIFdvcmxkIQ== 2.2. Decode. To perform decoding, we use the -d flag with the base64 command: $ base64 -d
The -D flag tells base64 to decode the input. You need to hit enter after base64 -D before pasting the encoded string. Then ctrl+d after pasting to decode. This ensures base64 is ready and waiting for input before you paste, and knows when the input is complete.
