Our last video showed you when to use commas, but its also important to know when not to use them. The simplest answer is, you probably dont need any commas outside of the situations weve already described. Theyre unnecessary, and throwing them into a sentence might cause readers to stumble, like throwing a branch into the trail where nobodys expecting it. The period and the comma always go within the quotation marks. The dash, semicolon, question mark and exclamation point go within the quotation marks when they apply to the quoted matter only. They go outside when they apply to the whole sentence. Use a semicolon to clarify a series that includes a number of commas.
Use a comma to introduce a quotation after a standard dialogue tag, a brief introductory phrase, or a dependent clause. For example: He said, I may forget your name, but I never forget a face.
Put commas and periods within quotation marks, except when a parenthetical reference follows. He said, I may forget your name, but I never forget a face.
Quotation marks are ALWAYS used in pairs, one at the beginning of the quoted text and one at the end. The same rule applies to titles and words used in a special sense or for emphasis. Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote.
Step-by-Step to Remove Commas from Year Parameter in Tableau: Edit the Year Parameter: - Locate the Year parameter in Tableau. Create a Calculated Field for Cleaned Year: - Name the new field (e.g., Clean Year) = REPLACE([Year], ,, ) Modify Date Calculations: Apply Changes Throughout Workbook:
Direct Quotations Quotation marks always come in pairs. Capitalize the first letter of a direct quote when the quoted material is a complete sentence. Do not use a capital letter when the quoted material is a fragment or only a piece of the original materials complete sentence.
