You can hide the little arrows by going to the Home tab and clicking on the paragraph mark button. If the little arrows are still visible, go to the File tab, click on Options, and then select Display. In the Display options, uncheck the box next to Show all formatting marks and click OK.

As you have correctly diagnosed, the little arrows (or triangles) are shown next to headings. For each heading, the arrow indicates that you can collapse or expand the subordinate text paragraphs beneath the heading. That arrow means its a collapsible heading, usually an indicator of the use of Heading styles. Its a navigational aid and not visible in print.
