A tag is a git concept whereas a Release is GitHub higher level concept. As stated in the official announcement post from the GitHub blog: Releases are first-class objects with changelogs and binary assets that present a full project history beyond Git artifacts.
To create a release, use the gh release create subcommand. Replace tag with the desired tag for the release. gh release create TAG. Follow the interactive prompts. Alternatively, you can specify arguments to skip these prompts. For more information about possible arguments, see the GitHub CLI manual.
If you go to GitHub and go to the Releases tab you will see the newly created tag. Now you are ready to create the release. Click on Draft a new release to bring up the form to create a new release.
At the top of the page, click Draft a new release. To chose a tag for the release, select the Choose a tag dropdown menu. To use an existing tag, click the tag. To create a new tag, type a version number for your release, then click Create new tag.
A Git release is a GitHub object that helps show official program versions on your project page. The object allows showing a specific commit point, a Git tag, with a release status. Managing releases is an easy and straightforward process performed on the GitHub website.
They are very similar, the difference being that tags are just the repository frozen in time and are part of Git (you can make a tag inside of Git), but releases are tags accompanied with a binary file and are not part of Git (you need to go to your Codeberg repository page to create a release).
Tagging is generally used to capture a point in history that is used for a marked version release (i.e. v1. 0.1). A tag is like a branch that doesnt change. Unlike branches, tags, after being created, have no further history of commits.
Releases are based on Git tags, which mark a specific point in your repositorys history. A tag date may be different than a release date since they can be created at different times. For more information about viewing your existing tags, see Viewing your repositorys releases and tags.
You can tag a revision right after your commit or later (after a push). Then, you can push your tag with: git push origin [tagname] .
At the top of the page, click Draft a new release. To chose a tag for the release, select the Choose a tag dropdown menu. To use an existing tag, click the tag. To create a new tag, type a version number for your release, then click Create new tag.
