A bit string, interpreted as a binary number, can be translated into a decimal number. For example, the lower case a, if represented by the bit string 01100001 (as it is in the standard ASCII code), can also be represented as the decimal number 97.
What does 10101 mean in binary? In binary, 10101 converts to 21 in decimal. This can be written in expanded notation as the following equation: 1 x 2^4 + 0 x 2^3 + 1 x 2^2 + 0 x 2^1 + 1 x 2^0 = 16 + 0 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 21.
01001000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 00100001 Those ones and zeros might not look like anything to you, but in binary code the numbers are actually saying Hello!
To write a message in binary we have to first look at the message one letter at a time and convert each of these, one-by-one, into decimal numbers, and then convert each of these numbers, one-by-one, into binary numbers. Students perform these same steps in reverse to convert the message back to text.
Each character has an associated decimal value. ASCII characters include the characters a-z, A-Z, 0-9 and an assortment of punctuation marks. In the first example of the previous section, the binary number is 01101000 (decimal number 104). In ASCII, this number would produce lowercase h.
