this is an introduction to x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy photoelectron spectroscopy uses different light sources to learn about the interactions and positions of atoms and their electrons this is done using photo electron spectrometer xamp;#39; which use a high-energy light source to energize the sample this light source is usually invisible light in the form of x-rays the x-rays have a higher energy level that is able to be transferred to the electrons and that makes them jump out of the sample the photo electron spectrometer is a large metal container that keeps the electrons on the path to the detector this detector tells us a lot about the electron that jumped off the surface that electron is like a hand for the atom it can hold hands with other atoms via their electrons these are called bonds sometimes certain atoms hold hands tighter with certain atom friends than others this makes them harder to pull apart that means that it takes more energy to make that electron jump this

The blue curve indicates a 5-year derivative. The strength of the XPS technique relies on that the chemical environment of an atom has a pronounced effect on the assessed binding energies (BEs) of core-level electrons, the effect commonly referred to as the chemical shift [2].
Auger Electrons: Auger electrons are typically emitted from the near-surface region of a material, providing information about the top few nanometers. Secondary Electrons: Secondary electrons can be emitted from deeper within the material, depending on the energy of the incident electrons.
Auger electrons are electrons that are emitted when an electron from a higher energy level falls into a vacancy in an inner shell. The process usually occurs when the atom is bombarded with high energy electrons.
Here, higher binding energies mean also higher oxidation states. This is known as chemical shift. A good starting point for a literature research for the peak shifts of your material is the XPS database of NIST:
Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) is a characterization technique that is commonly used for the study of material surface. It was first used in 1953 by J.J. Lander and it incorporates a phenomenon called the Auger Process to give surface composition information with very high resolution (Grant, 2003).
In general, it is known that for most materials, when the XPS peak becomes higher shift, it means strong bonding with oxidation, and conversely, when the electron concentration increases, it is known that it is referred to as lower shift.
Auger signals arise from much smaller volumes, down to about 3e-19 cc. The X-ray analytical volume increases with electron beam energy and decreases for materials with higher atomic numbers. The Auger analytical volume depends on the beam diameter and on the escape depth of the Auger electrons.
Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) is one of the most commonly employed surface analysis techniques. It uses the energy of emitted electrons to identify the elements present in a sample, similar to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
