Tone burst repeater access method. The first method that was introduced to access repeaters and prevent spurious activation of them was to use a simple burst of a tone at the beginning of a transmission. This tone burst lasted for possibly less than half a second and the tone had to be of a specific frequency.
It is actually the same thing. Tone transmits a sub-audible tone of the selected frequency so it can open the squelch of radios set only to open the squelch if it detects that frequency. This tone is commonly called a CTCSS tone. The receive circuit of the radio still opens on ANY transmission.
In the amateur-radio community, CTCSS encode is often referred to as tone in radio programming, while CTCSS decode is referred to as tone squelch. In commercial radio programming, this same concept is referred to simply as PL, QT, CG (depending on the manufacturer) transmit and receive.
Tone burst is an obsolete method of selective calling where the radio transmits a single 0.5- to 1.5-second audio tone at the beginning of each transmission.
The idea is very simplethe FM transmitter includes a continuous tone on the transmitted audio. When the receiver (repeater) hears the required tone, the squelch opens. If there is no tone, the receiver stays squelched, no matter how strong the signal is at the receiver.
