Types of Tack Welding While there are several approaches to tack welding, the three most common methods are: Standard tack weld. Bridge tack weld. Hot tack weld.
Tack welds of the fillet type may be qualified by a groove weld test or fillet weld test in full compliance with the requirements of Section IX.
An ITI course in welding typically covers the basics of welding technology, safety measures and practical training in different welding processes. The course duration ranges from one to two years and requires a minimum qualification of 8th or 10th class, depending on the institute.

For ASME fabrication, tack welds are addressed by the fabrication (book) sections of the Code thusly. For tack welds to left in place, the welders must be qualified per Section IX, i.e. per QW-303.1 by groove weld testing (or for fillet welds only by fillet weld testing QW-303.2).
When bridge tack welding, the engineer must apply small tacks on each component alternately so that each side has time to cool down before re-tacking. Bridge tack welding can be challenging, as its easy to apply excess heat in the process, which can widen the gap on the opposite side of the joint.
The primary purpose of standard tack welding is to hold two pieces of metal in the correct position and should not be visible after the final welding. Tack welds are placed within the weld joint; if sized correctly, they will disappear into the final weld. Tack welding is all about striking the right balance.
Tack welding is used to temporarily hold two pieces of metal together ahead of a final welding procedure. These welds make sure the two workpieces are rigidly aligned as desired and that the joint gap and orientation are correct.
