The strength of tack welds, like other welds, is proportional to the throat size, and the length. Thus, a stronger tack weld may be made by making it with a larger throat, or longer length, or both.
The tack weld is created by creating small, dot-like welds along the joints length. Theyre designed to temporarily hold metal parts in place. The number of tack welds required will depend on the geometry, measurements, material thickness and type of metal used.
Tack welds are used to hold two metal pieces in place ready for final welding, just as a tailor may use pins to hold two pieces of material together before sewing. These welds make sure the workpieces are correctly and rigidly aligned, reinforcing or even eliminating the use of fixtures.
Tack welding takes place before the actual final welds are completed, including any spot welding. Tack welding is a temporary process that ensures that any parts to be welded are held securely and properly aligned, while spot welding finally joins the parts together.

Tack welds are small and temporary welds that hold parts together ready for final welding. Using tack welds mean that fixtures may not be required to hold parts together to create a finished weld. Tack welds maintain the desired alignment and gap between the pieces of metal being joined.
You tack weld using the same method as youll use for the final bead. However, instead of welding several inches, you would add a few small 1/4 to 1/2-inch long tacks along the workpiece to stabilize it.
There is very little application for spot or other types of resistance welding on lead, zinc or tin; consequently, no satisfactory processes have been developed.
