[Music] my name is Megan McCoy Im a grad student at WSU and Im gonna be talking about how to do the quick and dirty method of soil texture in a vineyard or out in the field so you take a handful of the soil that you have here I have a little bit of water here and its kind of about finding the perfect ratio to make sure that you have enough water to make it wet but not so much that its too wet so the idea is that you make a soil ribbon so Im gonna add some water Im just gonna create a ball and so what youre doing here is youre getting your so completely wet and then you use the force between I use the force between my index finger and my thumb and I just put that that wet soil here in my hand and I push it between my thumb and my forefinger to create what we call a soil ribbon so it creates this ribbon so you can see the how it feels so you can see the different types of textures so youre looking to see if theres a sandy soil or if it has a lot of clay its a little bit more s

Timing. Generally, a tack coat should be allowed enough time to break and set (emulsion) or cure (cutback) before applying the next layer of HMA.
Usually, most tack coat materials require 1 to 2 hr to fully cure (set). It is generally recommended to let the materials completely cure before placing a new HMA layer on top of them.
The most common tack coat materials are asphalt emulsions, with slow setting emulsions (SS-1, SS-1h, CSS-1, and CSS-1h) being the most common (1). Other asphalt emulsions which are increasingly used for tack coat including rapid- setting emulsions such as RS-1, RS-2, CRS-1 and CRS-2.
Before applying the tack coat, the tack coat must be heated to a temperature ranging from 120- 160F. When considering the temperature at which to heat the tack coat before application, the surface that it is being applied to does not need to be taken into consideration.
Tack coats should not be applied during period of cold or wet weather. Best results are obtained if the road surface is dry, has a surface temperature above 27C (80F), and there is no threat of rain.
Tack coat is a sprayed application of an asphalt binder upon an existing asphalt or Portland cement concrete pavement prior to an overlay, or between layers of new asphalt concrete.
Tack coat (also known as bond coat) is a light application of asphalt emulsion between hot mix asphalt layers designed to create a strong adhesive bond without slippage. Heavier applications may be used under porous layers or around patches where it also functions as a seal coat.
Too much tack coat can create a lubricated slippage plane between layers, or can cause the tack coat material to be drawn into an overlay, negatively affecting mix properties and even creating a potential for bleeding in thin overlays (Flexible Pavements of Ohio, 2001).
