[Music] my name is Megan McCoy Im a grad student at WSU and Im gonna be talking about how to do the quick and dirty method of soil texture in a vineyard or out in the field so you take a handful of the soil that you have here I have a little bit of water here and its kind of about finding the perfect ratio to make sure that you have enough water to make it wet but not so much that its too wet so the idea is that you make a soil ribbon so Im gonna add some water Im just gonna create a ball and so what youre doing here is youre getting your so completely wet and then you use the force between I use the force between my index finger and my thumb and I just put that that wet soil here in my hand and I push it between my thumb and my forefinger to create what we call a soil ribbon so it creates this ribbon so you can see the how it feels so you can see the different types of textures so youre looking to see if theres a sandy soil or if it has a lot of clay its a little bit more s
