It is recommended that all application specifications be in terms of residual asphalt. While some researchers have indicated that tack coats may not always be needed to get good bonding, the preponderance of literature supports always using tack coats between lifts of asphalt.
Usually, most tack coat materials require 1 to 2 hr to fully cure (set). It is generally recommended to let the materials completely cure before placing a new HMA layer on top of them. Various studies confirmed this recommendation by showing that longer curing time results in better interface strength performance.
What is tack coat? Tack coat (also known as bond coat) is a light application of asphalt emulsion between hot mix asphalt layers designed to create a strong adhesive bond without slippage. Heavier applications may be used under porous layers or around patches where it also functions as a seal coat.
A tack coat is an adhesive material applied between layers of the asphalt concrete that is laid down for road construction. The adhesive when applied correctly, helps to prevent the degradation of the road by keeping the asphalt concrete layers together. Fig. 1 shows the application of a tack coat over a pavement.
Too much tack coat can create a lubricated slippage plane between layers, or can cause the tack coat material to be drawn into an overlay, negatively affecting mix properties and even creating a potential for bleeding in thin overlays (Flexible Pavements of Ohio, 2001).
Yes, you can drive on the tack coat, or oil, but drive slowly to minimize spray. If you have a brick or concrete driveway, avoid driving into your driveway while fresh tack coat is on the pavement. The tack coat typically dries after one to two hours.
