Its the age-old question, what the heck do you do with hardtack because [Chomp Chomp] biting into it aint the cards. Well during theAmerican Civil War theyd make hellfire stew. A big thank you to Wondrium for sponsoring this video as I test the strength of myteeth and my stomach with hellfire stew from theAmerican Civil War this time on Tasting History. So one of the main ingredients in hellfire stew is hardtack [Clack Clack] and as it happens last year I made somehard tack and I still have quite a bit left overso thats what Im going to be using. Now this isactually called a ships biscuit, they are onein the same. Hardtack was a term that was usedlater during the American Civil War. There aredifferences between this version and what wouldhave been used in the Civil War. This one is basedoff of what would have been made in the BritishNavy in the 19th century and there are a fewdifferences. First of all the shape. This was meantto be kept in barre

A tack is a nautical term both for the lower, windward corner of a sail and, separately, for the windward side of a sailing craft (side from which the wind is coming while under waythe starboard or port tack.
To tack is to change direction by turning the bow of the boat through the wind. Your tack is also the course you are on relative to the wind. For example, if the wind is blowing over the port side, you are on a port tack.
Jibing, one of the other turning maneuvers is simply the opposite of a tack. Recall that during a tack, the bow of the boat passes through the wind. During a jibe, the stern of the boat passes through the wind. We teach tacking before jibing because tacking is a safer turn.
The principal points of sail roughly correspond to 45 segments of a circle, starting with 0 directly into the wind. For many sailing craft 45 on either side of the wind is a no-go zone, where a sail is unable to mobilize power from the wind.
Tacking angles vary widely based on the boat, the wind speed, and the ability of the skipper to sail the boat for best upwind performance. For most boats, in very light wind youll tack through an angle of 95-100 or perhaps more. In strong wind, you could tack through an angle of as little as 70-75.
Tacking is how you head upwind, pointing as high into the wind as possible, to keep the sails full. A jibe is conducted when you are heading downwind. Both involve the processes of turning the boat to change course when the current direction of travel is no longer possible or safe.
A tack is a nautical term both for the lower, windward corner of a sail and, separately, for the windward side of a sailing craft (side from which the wind is coming while under waythe starboard or port tack.
Under normal conditions, most boats today require a turn of 80 to 110 degrees to tack. Stop the turn as soon as possible. Dont tack through too wide of an angle.
