The adhesive can be hard to remove, and often leaves a stain. The mineral oil contained in the adhesive is the prime cause of the stain but that is only the tip of the problem. Using Blu Tack on porous surfaces increases the likelihood of stains.
Roll it slowly from the edges: Start at the top and roll the Blu Tack down slowly from the edges into a cylinder-like shape. This method avoids pulling off paint or wallpaper and leaves no sticky residue behind.
If the surface underneath the Blu Tack is old, delicate or porous, there may be a mark left behind by the sticky tack. Chewing gum remover, a citrus based cleaner, sugar soap or lighter fuel can sometimes remove the residue left behind.
Blu-tack can pull the paint and even the wallpaper off the walls. It can also leave grease marks and in some cases the tack dries so hard, it cant easily be removed without causing some damage.
Why does Blu Tack pull paint off the wall? Care should be taken on painted plaster as Blu Tacks adhesive qualities may cause paint to come away from wall. When walls havent been properly prepared prior to painting or there is insufficient paint on the plasterboard.
First give the area of the blue tack stain a very gentle sand with a 200 grit sand paper, just lightly as there is no need to take the paint off, next brush or roll a the affected area with a coat of Ronseal Stain Block and allow to dry completely.
Chewing gum remover, a citrus based cleaner, sugar soap or lighter fuel can sometimes remove the residue left behind. Do a patch test on an inconspicuous area first, to ensure that your chosen product will not further mark the wall.
Another common method for removing Blu Tack is white vinegar. This is one of the things which will dissolve it, and therefore make it easier to remove. The first thing to do is to gently heat the vinegar, if you can, by popping it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.
