Weakened Joints: Tack welds are generally smaller and less robust than final welds, so they contribute less to the overall strength of the joint. Poor filler metal can only create weak spots inside the welds and weaken the joints.
5.18.2.3 Nonincorporated Tack Welds. Tack welds not incorporated into final welds shall be removed, except that, for statically loaded structures, they need not be removed unless required by the Engineer.
Standard tack welds sit within the joint and are intended to be consumed by the final weld. A standard tack weld will hold the pieces together in the proper fit throughout the final welding process.
Continuous welds are stronger when done very well. But that takes some skill and understanding of the specific materials, their thickness and temperature, etc. If you do it wrong, it can fail. Tack welds are easier to do right.
While tack welding shouldnt be considered a permanent method of joining sheet metal and other materials, there are several advantages to using this method as part of the process.
Tack welds are small and temporary welds that hold parts together ready for final welding. Using tack welds mean that fixtures may not be required to hold parts together to create a finished weld.
Disadvantages of Tack Welding Since these welds are all so thin, they dont have the structural integrity of other types of welding like MIG or stick weld which create thicker, more permanent bonds. Furthermore, tack welds may not be acceptable for some materials due to their low heat threshold.
