I read a bunch of comments in the last video where we took a TIG welder and turned it into a spot welder using kind of an old school trick a lot of people said that this is something new to them and they learned something and theyamp;#39;re going to definitely use it in the future on future projects I thought that was really awesome but after that I received a lot of messages a few emails one of my students asked and I read a couple of comments where people were curious if this will work on aluminum now my initial answer to that question is always going to be no and thatamp;#39;s largely based on the characteristics of aluminum the things that I know and my EXP experience working with it but the fact of the matter is I donamp;#39;t actually know for sure because Iamp;#39;ve never tried it so I figured why donamp;#39;t we do what anybody else does when they donamp;#39;t have a definitive answer and figure it out for ourselves Iamp;#39;m Justin welcome to weld coach itamp;#39;s w

The distance between two weld joints should be 4 times the pipe wall thickness or one time the diameter of pipe but never closer than 1.5 inch. This is supposedly to prevent the overlap of HAZ of two joints.
Ideal for precise work and for small projects, tack welds are typically placed at small intervals along the work pieces. This spacing, typically 25-30mm (approximately one inch), should be enough to hold the metal pieces in place, but small enough to remain inconspicuous in the final weld.
These defects must be removed before making the final weld. Tack welds may be long or short. Some fitup operations require 12 long tacks fully fused into the root of the weld. I have seen some tacks cover more than half the length of the root.
5.18.2.3 Nonincorporated Tack Welds. Tack welds not incorporated into final welds shall be removed, except that, for statically loaded structures, they need not be removed unless required by the Engineer.
Standard tack welds sit within the joint and are intended to be consumed by the final weld. A standard tack weld will hold the pieces together in the proper fit throughout the final welding process.
The primary purpose of standard tack welding is to hold two pieces of metal in the correct position and should not be visible after the final welding. Tack welds are placed within the weld joint; if sized correctly, they will disappear into the final weld. Tack welding is all about striking the right balance.
