but welcome to another MedCram lecture today we're gonna talk about something a little different in terms of treatment we could actually talk about DNR full code palliative care just a quick primer on those sorts of things especially in terms of what we do in the intensive care unit but also what we do on the floor so I think this is kind of a confusing topic for some people who are not used to it DNR stands for do not resuscitate and of course the do and the not are pretty clear but the resuscitate can sometimes be a little confusing so when someone says somebody is DNR that means they don't want to be resuscitated but what does that exactly mean and I have they fully given consent about what it is that they want to have done well the opposite of DNR is a term that we sometimes call full code and that comes from the fact that when somebody in their heart stops or they stop breathing they have something called a code blue and it's during that code blue that you can do all sorts of thi...

Can a DNR be revoked? DNR can be revoked at any time by the patient or the person who acted on behalf of the agent. Revocation can be in the form of communication to responding health care professionals, destruction of the form, or removal of devices.
Yes. If your loved one is wearing a DNR bracelet and experiences cardiac or pulmonary arrest, she will receive measures of comfort care such as oxygen, pain medication, and emotional support. She will not receive CPR or defibrillation.
DNR protocols typically require the signing of an out-of-hospital DNR order by both the physician and patient (or the patients surrogate) and the use of a special identifier (eg, a bracelet or brightly colored form) that is worn by or kept near the patient.
A patient must be involved in a DNR decision if there is a chance that CPR would be successful provided also that the patient has mental capacity and they are willing to discuss the matter. A patient is entitled to refuse involvement in making a DNR decision.
Unless otherwise clarified and documented, a DNR/DNAR order is temporarily suspended while a patient is undergoing a surgical procedure and receiving care within the surgical operatory. If DNR/DNAR is present, there will be clarification of wishes with patient/designated health care agent(s) prior to surgery.
DNR should not be automatically suspended before an operation, but there should be a discussion and a decision by the patient about intraoperative resuscitation preoperatively. Palliative operations can be justified in patients with a standing DNR.
A do-not-resuscitate, or DNR, order is used to indicate when a patient chooses to forgo resuscitation, however recent analysis shows that multiple studies have connected the presence of DNR orders to elevated death rates, poorer medical care, and negative health outcomes.
A DNR order may be invalidated if the immediate cause of a respiratory or cardiac arrest is related to trauma or mechanical airway obstruction.
If you disagree with the decision then you should speak to the doctor, as you have the right to be consulted. You might not change her mind, but she should listen to you and explain the reasons for her decision. If you still disagree, then you can request a second opinion.
Did you know that there are two different types of DNR orders that can be chosen? The first is the DNR Comfort Care (DNRCC) and the other is the DNR Comfort Care- Arrest (DNRCC-Arrest).
