It is used, mainly in naval vessels, for inserting in a flag signal hoist to indicate a break in the signal, and that the flags below it form a new signal.
If the turn changes the wind from one side of the boat to the other, you will have tacked or jibed. It will be a TACK (also called coming about) if you turn the bow of the boat through the eye of the wind, and it will be a JIBE if you turn the stern through the eye of the wind. Jibing, one of the other turning maneuvers is simply the opposite of a tack. Recall that during a tack, the bow of the boat passes through the wind. During a jibe, the stern of the boat passes through the wind.
The Tacking Process involves teamwork. See below for the steps to follow: 1️⃣ One person sits beside each jib winch. 2️⃣ The helmsman calls Ready about! and, upon hearing Ready from the winch crew, shouts Lee Ho! Direction relative to the wind: Tacking is used when you want to move upwind, in the direction the wind is coming from. On the other hand, jibing is used when sailing downwind, in the direction the wind is blowing towards. Generally, a boat is on a starboard tack if the wind is coming over the starboard (right) side of boat with sails on port (left) side. Similarly, a boat is on a port tack if the wind is coming over the port (left) side of boat.
Unlike the tack, the sail will cross quickly to the new side without any luffing, and in a strong wind this sudden change of wind pressure from one side of the boat to the other can cause a capsize if precautions are not taken. Also, unlike the tack, a large change of course is not necessary for a jibe to occur.
Well, Tacking is where the wind starts off blowing from one side, moves to blowing over the front of the boat and then goes to the other side. And Gybing is the opposite, so the wind blows over the back of the boat during the turn.
