tack (wind coming from the starboard side, with sails thus out to the port, or left, side) is the stand-on vessel and the boat on the port tack must give way. The port-tack boat must also give way to a sailboat whose tack is uncertain (such as when sailing downwind using a spinnaker). windward boat must give way.
The boat on a starboard tack has the right of waythe wind coming over the starboard rail. When two vessels are on the same tack (the wind is coming from the same side), the leeward boat (downwind) has the right of way over the windward boat (that presumably has clean air for better sailing conditions).
Rule 1: When you are on the same tack as the other boat, the leeward boat has the right-of-way. Rule 2: When you are on opposite tacks, the starboard tack boat has the right-of-way. Rule 3: If you are overtaking the other boat, or it is overtaking you, the boat ahead (the overtaken boat) has the right-of-way.
The vessel which has the wind on its starboard (right) side has the right of way. The vessel which has the wind on its port (left) side must give way.
The situation of a sailing vessel with her sails trimmed for a wind which comes over her starboard side. Although the verb to tack postulates a vessel sailing close hauled, a vessel on any point of sailing is on the starboard tack if the wind comes over her starboard side.
Starboard Tack over Port Tack When sailboats approach on different tacks the boat on the starboard is the stand on vessel with right of way. The boat on the port tack is the give way vessel and should pass behind the other sailing vessel.
Generally, a boat is on a starboard tack if the wind is coming over the starboard (right) side of boat with sails on port (left) side. Similarly, a boat is on a port tack if the wind is coming over the port (left) side of boat.
