Definitions. Tack, in a strict definition, refers to the leather equipment, such as saddles and bridles that are used in equine activities. More commonly, the word tack is used to refer to any and all equipment, leather or not, that is used with horses.
Tack applies more to items you need to actually ride, including a horse saddle rack, bridle, bit, stirrups, reins, cinch, blanket/saddle pad, spurs, etc. Gear, on the other hand, usually refers to the items you need to keep your horse comfortable and groomed, such as brushes, feed buckets, etc.
This equipment includes such items as saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, reins, bits, and harnesses. Equipping a horse is often referred to as tacking up, and involves putting the tack equipment on the horse. A room to store such equipment, usually near or in a stable, is a tack room.
The three primary horse bridle parts are the headpiece, bit, and reins. The headpiece is the part that fits around the horses head and it includes the following: Crown Piece The crown piece describes the main strap that goes over a horses head just behind the ears that hold the rest of the bridle in place.
Tack is equipment or accessories equipped on horses and other equines in the course of their use as domesticated animals. This equipment includes such items as saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, reins, bits, and harnesses.
