Leave the vegetable and olive oils in the kitchen. They shouldnt be used on leather tack, as they can cause it to degrade over time. If you get a spot on the saddle seat, blot it immediately and do not let the spot soak into the leather, Wenske advises.
The most common time to oil your tack is when its brand spanking new before you even use it. The most common oil is neatsfoot oil, and many folks will even use olive oil. Apply with a sponge or rag. It will take a bit of time to truly soak in (sometimes days), so be patient.
Mink oil leaves leather tack soft and supple but may not make it water-proof. If you use mink oil, you need to use wax if you want to add water resistance to the tack. Sometimes, mink oil leaves a reddish tinge on the tack.
