a prime coat was defined as an application of a low-viscosity bitu- minous material to an absorptive surface, designed to penetrate, bond, and stabilize the existing surface and to promote adhesion between. it and the construction course that follows (2, p. 67).
Spray nozzles limit minimum application rates to approximately 0.05 gallons per square yard. Spray application rates closer to 0.10 gallons per square yard are recommended as they promote more even coverage. Dilution may be necessary to achieve even coverage.
The prime coat shall be applied only when the existing surface is dry or contains sufficient moisture to get uniform distribution, when the surface temperature is above 45а░F, and when the weather is not foggy or rainy. The temperature requirements may be waived, but only when so directed by the Engineer.
Asphalt Application Temperature The tack coat material in the distributor tank must be kept at the proper temperature to assure that the material can be sprayed uniformly onto the existing pavement surface. When an asphalt emulsion is used, it should normally be applied at a temperature between 120oF and 160oF.
Too much tack coat can create a lubricated slippage plane between layers, or can cause the tack coat material to be drawn into an overlay, negatively affecting mix properties and even creating a potential for bleeding in thin overlays (Flexible Pavements of Ohio, 2001).
Usually, most tack coat materials require 1 to 2 hr to fully cure (set). It is generally recommended to let the materials completely cure before placing a new HMA layer on top of them. Various studies confirmed this recommendation by showing that longer curing time results in better interface strength performance.
Before applying the tack coat, the tack coat must be heated to a temperature ranging from 120- 160F. When considering the temperature at which to heat the tack coat before application, the surface that it is being applied to does not need to be taken into consideration.
Historically, a prime coat has usually consisted of a spray-applied cutback bituminous material (e.g., MC-30) using a distributor truck for application. More recently, to enhance safety and reduce VOC emissions, emulsified asphalt specialty products (e.g., AEP, EAP,and PCE) have been successfully used.
