In 1924, a 143-foot tower was built to commemorate 628 people from the university community who died in World War I. It is Canada's second-largest war memorial after Parliament's peace tower. The tower has a carillon with 51 bells, including a 4-ton bell, and a unique mechanical clock. Two memorial screens honor the war dead, with 628 names on the south archway and 557 names inside the tower. The University holds a service of remembrance every year, attended by 1200-1400 people and represented by three faith leaders.
