Texas lawmakers say they want to increase teacher salaries by $15,000. The Democratic state Rep proposing the legislation calls it the biggest pay raise in Texas history. Austin Representative James Talerico says the pay raise cuts into a little less than half of the states total unclaimed revenue, including that historic budget surplus. And it would bump up the average teacher salary to nearly $74,000, one of the highest in the country. Hoarding this surplus while educators and children are suffering is immoral. Both sides of the aisle agree Texas teachers need a pay raise. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick even named it a priority in his inauguration speech. Democrats say 15,000 is an ideal number, but they still need to negotiate with Republican lawmakers.
