In the case of high heat input welding by SAW, the minimum length of a tack weld bead should be longer with a larger throat thickness than in the case of SMAW and semi-automatic GMAW to prevent fracturing of the tack weld bead, caused by welding distortion.
The distance between pipes must be as short as possible and always 0.2 mm. (In case of large gaps, use conven- tional tack-welding, a similar procedure with filler mate- rial and root protection gas).
Tack welds are small and temporary welds used to hold parts together before a final weld occurs. Tack welds help keep the right alignment and distance between the parts that are being fused together.
The tack welds are placed as smaller beads to ensure the final welding can be done correctly. Tack weld length generally varies from inches to inches or a minimum length of 4 mm. In general, a tack weld should be one inch in length. The thickness should be at most twenty metal thicknesses apart.
There is no official tack weld symbol, but the spot weld symbol (a circle) can be used instead and placed above, below, or on the reference line to show tack welds.
Ideal for precise work and for small projects, tack welds are typically placed at small intervals along the work pieces. This spacing, typically 25-30mm (approximately one inch), should be enough to hold the metal pieces in place, but small enough to remain inconspicuous in the final weld.
Even though most 24-gauge material is welded at number 1 or 2 on the voltage dial, a hotter voltage setting like 3 or 4 is more ideal for tack welding. The higher the voltage, the wetter the puddle will be, leading to a flat tack. This is known as wet-out.
The number of required tack welds depends on the joint geometry, length, material thickness, and metal type. All welders need tack welding as one of the fundamental skills in their toolbox. Almost every welding job requires tack welds, particularly complex joints.
