Tack is described as a measure of how quickly an adhesive bond is formed when two surfaces are brought together with light pressure. The faster two surfaces bond, the higher the tack. On the contrary, lower tack allows an adhesive film or tape to be repositioned.
Tack is measured in units of force (lb. or N) and is determined by the PSAs ability to wet the substrate.
Tack is described as a measure of how quickly an adhesive bond is formed when two surfaces are brought together with light pressure. The faster two surfaces bond, the higher the tack. On the contrary, lower tack allows an adhesive film or tape to be repositioned.
The Loop Tack test is used to measure the tack force / strength of a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) ing to ASTM D6195. Pressure sensitive adhesives are typically applied to films, labels, tapes, and stickers where the initial tack force is an important characteristic of the product.
Measuring Tack The first is the wetting stage where the tacky material must wet the substrate or a probes surface - the most common probe being the human thumb. The second stage is that of debonding the probe from the surface, and here rheological properties of the adhesive come into play.
In the rolling ball tack test, a ball is rolled on the adhesive surface of a sample tape, and the reciprocal of the arrival length of the rolling ball is used to express the tackiness. In this case, the contact pressure is the weight of the ball itself.
Tack is the property of an adhesive that enables it to form a bond of measurable strength (bond strength) immediately after the adhesive and the substrate are brought into contact under low pressure.
Tack alone will give you that instant bond, but wont keep your tape where you need it for long. If you want a longer and tougher bonding, you need adhesion. With a strong bond, it will require more pressure to remove the tape, which makes high adhesion tapes unsuitable for delicate surface applications.
