Definitions. Tack, in a strict definition, refers to the leather equipment, such as saddles and bridles that are used in equine activities. More commonly, the word tack is used to refer to any and all equipment, leather or not, that is used with horses.
Tack is equipment or accessories equipped on horses and other equines in the course of their use as domesticated animals. This equipment includes such items as saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, reins, bits, and harnesses.
Some of the most commonly seen and used horse tack includes: Bridle. Bit. Reins. Harness. Collar. Halter. Saddle / saddle pad. Cinch/Girth.
These are made of iron or brass, and they have three main parts: an eye for stirrup leathers or straps that attach the stirrup to the saddle, a platform or base to place the foot on, and arms to connect the eye to the base. All three parts may vary in terms of shape and decoration.
The word tack is a shortening of tackle which, as a noun, can mean equipment, apparatus or gear (although in modern usage, tackle typically refers to fishing or sailing gear). As a verb, tackle can mean to undertake the handling, solving, or mastering of something.
Bridle consists of a few basic parts browband, cheekpiece, throatlash, headpiece, noseband, flash, and reins. Most types of bridles for horses also have a bit. Browband this part is situated on the horses forehead.
