The term ink coverage refers to the amount of ink that is printed on a sheet of paper. The amount of ink used varies from job to job. A design that is predominantly text on a white, unprinted background, will have very little ink coverage.
Total area coverage or TAC, is the combined value of all CMYK inks for a particular area or object on a page. This value cannot exceed a specified amount, or ink may not transfer effectively and printed sheets may exhibit undesirable print quality characteristics such as blistering, picking or pages sticking together.
In the printing industry, we use the terms total area coverage (TAC) and total ink coverage (TIC) to quantify the highest percentage allowable that offset printing equipment or a certain type of paper stock can handle. Some printers max out at 240-260 percent while others can go as high as 300-320 percent.
TAC or Total Area ink Coverage is an important factor to control when printing, especially with newspaper printing as it is a cold-set process which means that there is no inline oven to dry the ink on the paper. Excessive inking can cause print quality issues like show through and set-off .
The maximum ink coverage is in general 300%. Again, dont forget to consider the paper type. For example, we recommend not to exceed 280% when using coated paper. If you exceed the maximum ink coverage, chances are not all the ink will be absorbed by the paper and stains will appear.
We recommend not to go below 10% for the minimum ink coverage. Lower values can be printed, but these often give a bad result. You also have to take the paper type into account.
Tack is a measure of the forces required to split a single film into two. In case of ink, such film splitting is influenced by rheological and adhesive ink properties and the internal cohesion of the ink. Tack depends heavily on the ink formulation.
Tack is measured 1 min after inks are distributed evenly on the rollers. Ink stabilities or ink length are compared at 10 min. Typically, sheet-fed inks have tacks of 15, whereas those of web offset inks are 10.
