The undulating path begins in Winchester Hampshire, and passes Cheesefoot Head, the towns of Petersfield and Arundel, the villages of Storrington and Steyning, Devils Dyke viewpoint near Brighton, followed by Ditchling Beacon and miles of chalk downland across to Beachy Head, and ending in Eastbourne, East Sussex.
The South Downs are a long chalk escarpment that stretches for over 110 km (68 mi), rising from the valley of the River Itchen near Winchester, Hampshire, in the west to Beachy Head near Eastbourne, East Sussex, in the east.
The South Downs way is situated in Hampshires second National Park the South Downs. The route begins in Winchester and stretches 100 miles to Eastbourne. Along the route are unspoilt views of countryside, small hamlet villages and the English channel.

Highlights of the South Downs Way: - Starting in the cathedral city of Winchester, the official start of the route is at the Winchester City Mill, where maps and additional information can be found Keep an eye out for otters in and around the mill.
How long does it take to complete the Trail? Most people take 8 or 9 days to walk the whole 100 miles (160km) at 12 15 miles (25km) a day. Its worth considering if you are walking that the villages where accommodation is are at the foot of the hill so youll have to walk down in the evening and up in the morning.
