Hardtack. Ship biscuits. Molar breakers. Seabiscuit. Galette or worm castles. They were all one and the same thing. Whether during the Civil War or beneath the Jolly Roger, these little pieces of overly dry dense bread were essential to the diet of any soldier orsoldier, and itamp;#39;s that latter one that weamp;#39;ll be talking about today. So thank you to the Great Courses Plus for sponsoring this video as we make ships biscuits and grog, and sail into the world of sailors and pirates this time on Tasting History. So Iamp;#39;m often asked where the ideas for these episodes come from and I thought this was actually a good one to kind of explain because itamp;#39;s a really circuitous route. Circuitous, yes. So I was talking to one of my Patreon patrons who goes by the name of Etrigan about Tolkien and Lord of the Rings, and the Lembas bread and cram that he has in those books and how they were probably based on the hard tack that he had eaten during Wor

Generally, a tack coat should be allowed enough time to break and set (emulsion) or cure (cutback) before applying the next layer of HMA.
Usually, most tack coat materials require 1 to 2 hr to fully cure (set). It is generally recommended to let the materials completely cure before placing a new HMA layer on top of them. Various studies confirmed this recommendation by showing that longer curing time results in better interface strength performance.
Before applying the tack coat, the tack coat must be heated to a temperature ranging from 120- 160F. When considering the temperature at which to heat the tack coat before application, the surface that it is being applied to does not need to be taken into consideration.
It is recommended that all application specifications be in terms of residual asphalt. While some researchers have indicated that tack coats may not always be needed to get good bonding, the preponderance of literature supports always using tack coats between lifts of asphalt.
Spray nozzles limit minimum application rates to approximately 0.05 gallons per square yard. Spray application rates closer to 0.10 gallons per square yard are recommended as they promote more even coverage. Dilution may be necessary to achieve even coverage.
What is tack coat? Tack coat (also known as bond coat) is a light application of asphalt emulsion between hot mix asphalt layers designed to create a strong adhesive bond without slippage. Heavier applications may be used under porous layers or around patches where it also functions as a seal coat.
