Tack is defined as the ability of an adhesive to form a bond to a surface after brief contact under light pressure. Often thought of as a simple property to measure, tack depends on a complex interaction of many different factors and, hence, there is no single value that characterises tack. What is tack coat? Tack coat (also known as bond coat) is a light application of asphalt emulsion between hot mix asphalt layers designed to create a strong adhesive bond without slippage. Heavier applications may be used under porous layers or around patches where it also functions as a seal coat.
Unlike the tack coat, prime coat penetrates into the layer below, plugs the voids, and forms a watertight surface. Seal Coat: Seal Coat Seal coat is a thin surface treatment used to water-proof the surface and to provide skid resistance.
A tack coat is very inexpensive insurance to improve the structural integrity of the pavement layer. There are many different types of tack coats and emulsions. A bond coat is a spray application of asphalt emulsion.
The selection of the appropriate tack coat material should be based on a combination of material properties and availability. The most common tack coat materials are asphalt emulsions, with slow setting emulsions (SS-1, SS-1h, CSS-1, and CSS-1h) being the most common (1).
