If the ACL is torn, your knee may become very unstable and lose its full range of movement. This can make it difficult to perform certain movements, such as turning on the spot. Some sports may be impossible to play.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) plays an important role in stabilizing translation and rotation of the tibia relative to the femur. ACL injury alters knee kinematics and usually links to the alternation of gait patterns.
ACL injuries most commonly occur during sports that involve sudden stops or changes in direction, jumping and landing such as soccer, basketball, football and downhill skiing.
Almost 9 out of 10 football ACL injuries happen with non-contact (44%) or indirect contact (44%) injury mechanism and thus a part of these injuries can be prevented. Four main situational patterns were identified with pressing/tackling (47%) and tackled (20%) injuries accounting for 67% of all NC or IC injuries.
Most patients with ACL deficiency lack dynamic knee stability (21) and experience episodes of instability with daily activities. After injury, these patients adopt an asymmetrical gait pattern which includes less knee flexion and a decreased internal knee extensor moment for the injured limb (22, 30, 31).
The study reports that the maximum loading of the ACL occurs during midstance. The corresponding knee angle varies between 15 and 20. During the swing phase, the ACL was minimally loaded.
An ACL tear will present with a pattern of swelling, known as a haemarthrosis (bleeding within the joint). A haemarthrosis presents as a collection of fluid particularly prominent above the patella (kneecap) and medial knee see the image below.
The cruciate ligaments control the front and back motion of your knee. The anterior cruciate ligament runs diagonally in the middle of the knee. It prevents the tibia from sliding out in front of the femur and provides rotational stability to the knee. The PCL keeps the shinbone from moving backward too far.
