This is a dangerous practice as it can be intercepted by a cybercriminal or lost in the process. Copies of the spreadsheet can easily be made and there is no way to see who can access the information or prevent former employees from taking it.
How to unprotect Excel sheet Right-click the sheet tab, and select Unprotect Sheet from the context menu. On the Review tab, in the Changes group, click Unprotect Sheet. On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click Format, and select Unprotect Sheet from the drop-down menu.
Open the document, worksheet, or presentation. Go to File Info. Select Protect Workbook, point to Restrict Permission by People, and then select Manage Credentials.
On the Review tab, select Protect Sheet. In the Allow all users of this worksheet to list, select the elements you want people to be able to change. Move the pointer to cells for which the Locked box is checked on the Protection tab of the Format Cells dialog box. By default, users are allowed to select locked cells.
Microsoft uses AES-256 encryption, which is currently one of the most advanced encryption systems and is almost impenetrable. When password-protecting your file, ensure you use strong passwords. Share them securely, and dont reuse old passwords.
Protect an Excel file Select File Info. Select the Protect Workbook box and choose Encrypt with Password. Enter a password in the Password box, and then select OK. Confirm the password in the Reenter Password box, and then select OK.
Require a password to open or modify a workbook Open the sheet or workbook that you want to protect. On the Review tab, click Protect Sheet or Protect Workbook. In the Password box, type a password, and in the Verify box, type the password again. Choose any other protection options you want and click OK. Click Save.
Unless you provide them with the password, they wont be able to view or edit the data. Open your Excel file and go to File Info Protect Workbook Encrypt with Password. Enter the password and click OK to save. Re-enter the password to confirm. To check that this method worked, reopen your workbook.
