Tack coat (also known as bond coat) is a light application of asphalt emulsion between hot mix asphalt layers designed to create a strong adhesive bond without slippage. Heavier applications may be used under porous layers or around patches where it also functions as a seal coat.
Tack coat is a sprayed application of an asphalt binder upon an existing asphalt or Portland cement concrete pavement prior to an overlay, or between layers of new asphalt concrete.
The differences between Tack Coat and Prime Coat Spreading a layer of low or medium-hardness liquid bitumen over the sandy surface of the road is referred to as Prime Coating. Spreading a layer of asphalt or concrete on the surface of the road is referred to as Surface Coating or Tack Coating.
Asphalt Emulsions: The clean bond coat is a slow setting anionic asphalt emulsion specifically designed to be very stable and allow for a shorter return to traffic and overlay. The tack coat cures very quickly and provides a non-tracking, non-tacky finish.
Tack and prime coats help protect pavement from water damage and can prevent slipping on slick asphalt surfaces. A tack coat, or bond coat, is a thin layer of asphalt emulsion applied specifically between hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement lifts to help with the bonding process.
Usually, most tack coat materials require 1 to 2 hr to fully cure (set). It is generally recommended to let the materials completely cure before placing a new HMA layer on top of them.
The tack coat also greatly reduces the amount of sliding or slippage failures that may occur between the existing pavement surface and the new HMA pavement layer. Thus, the proper application of the tack coat is very important in the long term durability of the asphalt concrete pavement.
