Residual Asphaltthe remaining asphalt after an emulsion has set, typically 57-70 percent of the undiluted emulsion. Tack Coat Breakthe moment when water separates enough from the asphalt to show a color change from brown to black.
Tack coat (also known as bond coat) is a light application of asphalt emulsion between hot mix asphalt layers designed to create a strong adhesive bond without slippage. Heavier applications may be used under porous layers or around patches where it also functions as a seal coat.
Usually, most tack coat materials require 1 to 2 hr to fully cure (set). It is generally recommended to let the materials completely cure before placing a new HMA layer on top of them.
Tack coats should not be applied during period of cold or wet weather. Best results are obtained if the road surface is dry, has a surface temperature above 27C (80F), and there is no threat of rain.
Therefore, the estimated quantity of tack coat is determined as follows: Quantity of Tack Coat = (quantity of emulsion in gallons) (gallons of emulsion per ton) = 61,952 gallons 240 gal./ton = 258.1 tons Quantity of Tack Coat = 259 tons.
A property of materials that allows them to adhere to a surface immediately upon contact. Tack is sometimes referred to as the stickiness of a material while it is in a fluid or semi-fluid state, and is a quality that allows immediate adhesion between two surfaces with a minimum of pressure and contact time.
Too much tack coat can create a lubricated slippage plane between layers, or can cause the tack coat material to be drawn into an overlay, negatively affecting mix properties and even creating a potential for bleeding in thin overlays (Flexible Pavements of Ohio, 2001).
Usually, most tack coat materials require 1 to 2 hr to fully cure (set). It is generally recommended to let the materials completely cure before placing a new HMA layer on top of them.
It can be applied as low as 250F. DOTC-LT is cool to touch within 30 seconds after application and can be driven on/paved upon in minutes. Additionally, our tack can be produced at the terminal or contractor facilities without high shear or emulsion milling.
The tack coat also greatly reduces the amount of sliding or slippage failures that may occur between the existing pavement surface and the new HMA pavement layer. Thus, the proper application of the tack coat is very important in the long term durability of the asphalt concrete pavement.
