Tack, in a strict definition, refers to the leather equipment, such as saddles and bridles that are used in equine activities. More commonly, the word tack is used to refer to any and all equipment, leather or not, that is used with horses.
Use the times you clean it to inspect it more thoroughly and clean it every time you come back from riding particularly after strenuous exercise. Always inspect tack after an accident and if in any doubt take it to you saddler.
Its recommended by the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) that saddles should be checked at least twice a year. However, some horses change shape more often, due to fitness, condition and age and would obviously require more regular visits.
The single most important thing that you can do for your tack is to clean it regularly. Wipe it down after every ride, and clean and condition it weekly. At least every few months, take every part of your saddle and bridle apart and thoroughly clean, condition and inspect it.
Tack is equipment or accessories equipped on horses and other equines in the course of their use as domesticated animals. This equipment includes such items as saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, reins, bits, and harnesses.
It is just as important to regularly check that your tack is safe too. Accidents from tack breakages can cause serious harm to you and your horse. A good way to monitor your tack health is to clean and condition it. Doing this regularly will ensure your tack lives a long life and you can check for wear and tear.
The most important pieces of riding tack are the saddle, bridle, and reins. But tack also encompasses many other items such as stirrups, cinches, bits, blankets, bell boots, horseshoes, and halters.
Where you mark tack. On leather saddles, the postcode and house number are stamped to the panel under the saddle flap behind the left thigh. On synthetic saddles, the postcode and house number are engraved on the stirrup bar on the left hand side of the saddle.
Whats in your Tack Trunk? Whats in your tack trunk? Water bottle. Though not a necessary part of your riding gear it certainly doesnt hurt to hydrate while youre in the saddle! Brush or comb. Gloves. Mirror and Whiteboard Insert. Extra hairnets. Boot Polish. Fly veil.
If you ride between 4 and 6 times per week, you should lightly clean and condition your equipment every 2 to 4 weeks. You may clean more or less frequently depending on how much you ride, the quality of your equipment, the climate and storage conditions for your tack.
