FTX is a platform heavily focused on medium to advanced crypto trading, including spot margin trading and derivatives. The main FTX platform has a native called FTT, but it is not available in the US version of this platform.
Margin trading is one where you essentially take a loan to take a trade and pay interest on the loan. Futures trading is one where you trade using futures contracts by simply paying a deposit. There is no time duration on a margin trade you can hold it as long as you want to stay in the trade.
In that example, the trader has 20 times leverage, which is what FTX allowed its customers to trade with. At one point, FTX allowed them to trade with 100 times leverage, but in July 2021 it reduced that allowance to encourage responsible trading, Bankman-Fried said in a Twitter announcement.
You can lend out your funds at predetermined interest rates to users that want to trade with margin. Similarly, you can borrow funds for margin trading from other users and repay with interest. Margin trading on FTX US is only available to users with at least $100,000 or equivalent assets in their account.
Today were introducing spot margins which allows users to borrow additional funds for trading. Previously, when using FTX for spot markets, you must have adequate balances in the quote currency to exchange for the base currency.
When you open a margin position, youre extended funds to cover the entire value of your trade. So, if you have $10 as collateral and buy Bitcoin worth $50, youd be borrowing additional $40 (position would be $50 in BTC and -$40 USD).
