This video is a part of a series of videos on staking to lines within Leica Captivate. It will show how to use the Stake to line app for staking a line or segments of a line. The video follows on from the Staking a line overview video, and uses the example House Project, where several different lines form a road, a building footprint, a service line and a pipeline. Let us take a look at where our line might come from. As mentioned in the Staking to a line overview video, the line can simply be a line between two points or a polyline with multiple points and segments, which can be made up of straights and arcs. To be used in the Stake to line app, the line must exist in a normal job. Either the line already exists in a job, for example it was already measured or imported, or it will need to be created, for example by importing attached CAD data, or creating a new line between existing points. Jibing, one of the other turning maneuvers is simply the opposite of a tack. Recall that during a tack, the bow of the boat passes through the wind. During a jibe, the stern of the boat passes through the wind. We teach tacking before jibing because tacking is a safer turn.
The tack is the corner on a fore-and-aft sail where the luff (the forward edge) and foot (the bottom edge) connect and, on a mainsail, is located near where the boom and mast connect.

However, a jibe can generally be completed more quickly than a tack because the boat never turns into the wind, and thus a jibing boats sails are always powered whereas a tacking boats luffing sails are un-powered while the bow crosses through or into the direction of the wind.
When calculating the length of your mooring line, it is possible to follow a general rule of thumb. For bow lines and stern lines, the length of the line should be at least half the length of your boat. For spring lines, the length should be the full length of the boat or longer.

When referring to a change in direction, position, or course of action, the correct phrase is to change tack. This is in reference to the nautical use of tack which refers to the direction of a boat with respect to sail position. This phrase has long been confused as change tact but this is technically incorrect.
