Each sheet needs to be about twice the length of the boat plus 10 feet. To fly the sail – make sure tack line is set and cleated, bear off to a broad reach.
If the turn changes the wind from one side of the boat to the other, you will have tacked or jibed. It will be a TACK (also called coming about) if you turn the bow of the boat through the eye of the wind, and it will be a JIBE if you turn the stern through the eye of the wind.
The Gybe. Like a tack, the gybe takes place when you turn a boat through the wind and take it from one tack (say port) to another (say starboard) - or vice versa. The difference is that in the case of a gybe (as opposed to a tack) we have turned the stern (back) of the boat through the wind.
In a small boat such as the Tech Dinghy, the tack is a safer maneuver so you should start with the tack rather than the jibe. The closest angle you can expect to sail toward the wind is a 45° angle, so to perform a tack you must turn a minimum of 90° to complete the tack.
As a general rule, the length of bow and stern lines should equal two-thirds of your boat's overall length. Spring lines should be slightly longer, approximately the same length as your boat.
When your destination is downwind on the opposite tack, then a jibe is called for. A jibe has three steps: Starting from a broad reach, initiate the jibe with the command “Prepare to jibe.” Release the preventer and turn slowly downwind.
The tack is the corner on a fore-and-aft sail where the luff (the forward edge) and foot (the bottom edge) connect and, on a mainsail, is located near where the boom and mast connect.
Tacking is the sailing manoeuvre used to change a boat's direction through an oncoming wind. Tacking a sailing boat calls for the crew to work as a co-ordinated team and is one of the first sailing skills to learn.
Clew – The corner where the leech and foot connect is called the clew on a fore-and-aft sail. On a jib, the sheet is connected to the clew; on a mainsail, the sheet is connected to the boom (if present) near the clew. Clews are the lower two corners of a square sail.
Tack – Between the luff and the foot is the tack. The tack is attached to the boat or a spar. Head – The corner at the top of the sail between the luff and the leech. Clew – The third triangle of a sail between the leech and the foot.
