What Is a Hyphenated Last Name? A hyphenated last name is when you and your spouse combine both of your last names with a hyphen. This is also called a double surname. In many states, when you fill out your application for your marriage license, youll be writing your intended married name on that application.
Traditionally, family names come first in Japanese, as they do in China and Korea.
North German, Dutch, and Flemish: from Middle Low German tack(e), Middle Dutch tac twig, branch, possibly a topographic or habitational name referring to a house or inn with the sign of a branch, or perhaps a metaphoric (ironic) nickname.
Traditionally, the first letters of their first, last and middle name are used, in that order. For couples, if they share their last name, the last name remains in the middle with the initials of their first names on the left and right side.
In the Anglophonic world, a surname is commonly referred to as the last name because it is usually placed at the end of a persons full name, after any given name. In many parts of Asia and in some parts of Europe and Africa, the family name is placed before a persons given name.
There are 209,000 census records available for the last name Hand.
Traditionally, the first surname is paternal and comes from the father, while the second surname is maternal and comes from the mother. In recent years, some countries have allowed parents to alter the order of surnames for their children, but in historical records paternal surnames generally precede maternal names.
In my experience, the use of the term II generally indicates a son who has been named after a family member other than their father, such as a grandfather or an uncle. It is also sometimes used to identify the second male in a line of three with that name, although in that case Junior is usually the preferred term.
Naming practices developed differently from region to region and country to country. Yet even today hereditary names tend to fall into one of four categories: patronymic (named from the father), occupational, nickname or place name.
Last names started as a way to separate one John from another John. European last names had many sources. However, they can be put into four groups: patronymic, locative, occupational or status, and nicknames. The first surnames were quite simple.
